How to Answer Extension Question in Science Practical

There are normally about 4 marks allocated to the extension or modification question that can
be in either of the 2 compulsory questions. These experiments do not need to be carried out.

A typical question will give you a formula not seen before, but having variables that you
probably have studied before in your theory. You are then expected to

1. Plan an experiment to
• determine certain unknown value(s) within the formula
• observe a trend or determine a gradient whose behaviour can be derived
mathematically from the formula AND / OR
• determine x or y-intercepts

2. Provide a description of how the experiment would be conducted

3. Provide a sketch of the graph

4. Explain how you determine the unknown value(s) (not also required depending on
question]

As the question do not expect the candidate to carry out the experiment, the candidate do not
need to provide exact values to the values the question wants you to determine. The question is
interested in knowing how you are going to get the values.
The expected answer scheme is for the candidate to provide a step-by-step method of
performing an experiment like your typical guided experiments.

Guess where I am now? lol. I'm at the KrisFyler first class Lounge @ changi airport now typing away. My family and I leave in 30 mins time. At 9 am. I certainly hope that we'll have a great time there. Besides that, the food here is great, so high class! You've got haagen-das & ben and jerry's ice cream, wine, laksa, porridge, dim sum, you get the point. Well, thats all I have to say. I've got to go now. I'm finishing up my 2nd cup of ice cream and I need more! hahaha....see you!
